Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Gerstacker was born in Hamburg, Germany on May 10, 1816. He came to New York in 1837 and set out for West traveling by foot to Arkansas. And he spent three months in 1838 hunting on the Little Red River and working as fireman on a steamboat on the Arkansas River . He was a nineteenth-century author who wrote about his observations and social conditions.
